The institute was established in 1993 in Science Faculty. This institute achieved its basic and final licenses from Development Council of Ministry of Science, Research and Technology in 1995 and 1998, respectively. And in 2004, due to extension of activities, the name was changed to Laser and Plasma Research Institute (LAPRI).
 
The first master program of photonics was held in 2002. Subsequently, the PhD program of photonics and master program of plasma engineering were commenced in 2004 and 2005, respectively. These programs were established with the goal of professional and precise scientific activities in related subjects. The alumni of this institute frequently continue their studies or find a job in various related specialized organizations. The main goal of this research institute is to spread laser science, optics, photonics and plasma by training experts and carrying out fundamental researches in order to extend the frontiers of science and applied researches in industry and sciences.

Programs
 
Both master and PhD in photonics and Plasma engineering have been started in Iran in our Institute and we were the pioneer in introducing these courses in Iran. In both topics we accept international students:
 
 

 1. Photonics

 
 
By invention of laser and subsequently, the fabrication of optical fibers, the domain of optics and its applications in physics extended so much that a new field titled “photonics” was born. This newborn field has three subgroups: electronics, telecommunication and physics. In photonics, all the affairs related to light comprising its generation, modification, guidance, recording and detection are investigated. The results of this science have various applications in addition to extension of human knowledge about surrounding environment. Due to its interdisciplinary entity and its relation to the most of scientific and engineering fields, it attracts worldwide attention.

The related technologies to photonics that can be followed by alumni of this field are fabrication technology, development and studies on various lasers with different wavelengths and power, quantum optics, semiconductor physics for studying semiconductor lasers and their manufacturing, semiconductor detectors, optical fiber and its applications in order to solve the communication problems of Iran, research on nanophotonics technology to achieve the technology of digital photonic components and ultimately photonic processors, the investigation of optical properties of materials and manufacturing optical components.

Concentrations
 
The basis of photonics is related to two fields of electronics and optics. It focuses on the use of photonic circuits in electronic devices such as radars, optical fibers, etc.

 2. Plasma engineering

 
 
The field of plasma engineering comprises the plasma knowledge and its applications in military, industries and energy. To precise its applications, we can name surface and material processing, nanomaterial synthesis, enriched electromagnetic materials, telecommunications, etc.
 
The related technologies to plasma that can be followed by alumni of plasma engineering are Powerful microwave communications, gas lasers, electronic warfare, issues about welding with high temperatures, fabrication of nanometer parts for all the industries, fusion energy, etc.

Interdisciplinary Programs
 
We are planning courses between our Institute and Medical Departments. Also joint projects with different branches of science and technology were experienced such as agriculture, medicine, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, etc.
 
Admission Requirements
 
Just like any other institute, recommendation, history and education are important factors for us, but we need to have an interview for final decision as well. Good and accepted mark in an English test and a test like GRE is also required.
