In 1975, Faculty of Earth Sciences of Shahid Beheshti University was established as the first such institution in the country and in the next academic year started admitting students in three academic departments, Geology, Geography and Mineralogy-Petrology, each of which conducted an undergraduate course. Additionally, a post-graduate course of Physical Geography (Geomorphology) was offered at the faculty in the same year. By 1986, after restructuring and acquiring new organizational status in the form of two academic departments (Geology and Geography), the faculty expanded its activities in the post-graduate and research fields.
Department of Geology now conducts graduate programs in six disciplines including Petrology (Igneous and Metamorphic), Stratigraphy and Paleontology, Structural Geology and Tectonics, Economic Geology, Sedimentology and Sedimentary Petrology, and Hydrogeology. Department of Geography, on the other hand, offers graduate programs in Urban Planning, Rural Planning, Geomorphology and Climatology.

With establishment of Department of Remote Sensing and GIS, a postgraduate course in this field of expertise has been added to the courses of Faculty of Earth Sciences.

Many field visits of 1 to 10 day duration are organized for students and professors in each semester depending on the nature of the courses offered.
