Tree Planting Ceremony at Shahid Beheshti University in Honor of 35 Distinguished Professors.
Coinciding with Natural Resources Week, the annual tree planting ceremony was held with the participation of university officials, faculty members, students, and staff.
During the event, Dr. Seyed Mahmoud Reza Aghamiri, the university president, planted five saplings in honor of the martyred professor Dr. Shahriari and four other distinguished late professors. Additionally, the distinguished professors present at the ceremony planted trees in their own names.
On the sidelines of the event, the university president emphasized that planting trees in honor of outstanding professors is a way to recognize and appreciate the university's top scholars. He stated: "Today, in the presence of some of our distinguished professors, we have planted trees in honor of 35 faculty members who have been recognized as exemplary professors at the national level."
He further added: "This initiative aims to honor outstanding professors, highlight the significance of knowledge and scholars in society, and serve as an inspiration for young faculty members and students. I hope this effort will leave a lasting legacy for future generations." Highlighting the importance of preserving natural resources, the university president stated: "Planting trees not only helps expand green spaces, enhance the beauty of the campus, and create a lively environment but also contributes to environmental conservation and improving the quality of life in Tehran. Undoubtedly, tree planting is not just a social responsibility but also an investment for future generations, playing a crucial role in preserving the planet."
According to Engineer Mansouri, head of the university’s green space department, over 2,500 saplings were planted across various parts of the university’s three campuses this year. He also noted that the irrigation system for these newly planted trees will use non-potable water and operate through a drip irrigation method.
Planting of Yew Trees, a Precious Legacy of Iran’s Northern Forests, at the Zirab Campus
At the suggestion of Dr. Kermaniyan, president of Shahid Beheshti University’s Zirab campus in Savadkuh, Mazandaran, yew trees (Taxus Baccata) were planted for the first time at the Zirab campus during the tree-planting event.
Several faculty members personally planted trees in their names and committed to their long-term preservation. The yew tree is an ancient and remarkable species with medicinal properties. It is a slow-growing, highly durable conifer native to only a few regions worldwide, including northern Iran. Belonging to the Tertiary period, predating the Ice Age, these precious trees have survived for approximately 190 million years. Unfortunately, this invaluable species is now endangered. By planting yew trees, the university aims to contribute to the conservation of this natural treasure and raise awareness about its importance for future generations.
