The two-volume collection Smart and Connected Health, co-edited by Dr. Bahar Farahani from the Cyberspace Research Center of Shahid Beheshti University, Dr. Farshad Firouzi, and Dr. Krishnendu Chakrabarty from Arizona State University (ASU), was published by Springer Nature in 2026.

According to the Public Relations Office of Shahid Beheshti University, the collection aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the technologies, infrastructures, and applications underpinning smart and connected health. Comprising two complementary volumes, the collection follows a “from technology to application” approach.

The two volumes comprise a total of 18 chapters and more than 1,000 pages of scholarly content, with contributions from 47 authors affiliated with universities and research institutions in several countries, including Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, Italy, Portugal, and Norway.

The first volume, titled Smart and Connected Health: AI, IoT, and Trustworthy Technologies, focuses on the fundamental concepts and key technologies required for the design and development of smart and connected healthcare systems. Topics covered include machine learning and deep learning, generative artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs), smart sensors and wearable Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, computer vision, TinyML, edge and cloud computing, blockchain, security, and adversarial machine learning.

Spanning nine chapters and 711 pages, the volume not only presents specialized technical topics but also serves as an educational resource and scholarly reference for students, researchers, and professionals working in smart health and related technologies.

The second volume, titled Smart and Connected Health: Applications and Real-World Use Cases, focuses on the practical application of smart and connected technologies to real-world challenges and issues in healthcare. Intelligent support for clinical decision-making, stress monitoring, non-invasive cancer screening, diabetes management, Parkinson’s disease, and pandemic preparedness and response are among the topics and applications addressed in this volume.

By connecting technological foundations with real-world applications, this collection serves as an interdisciplinary reference for students, researchers, educators, engineers, and professionals working across healthcare, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and connected systems. It can also contribute to the development of innovative and personalized solutions in digital health.
