The book "Modelling, Simulation and Control of Neural Dynamics from Single Neuron to Neural Networks" authored by Dr. Kourosh Parand, professor of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), Dr. Jamal Amani Rad, assistant professor at the Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences of SBU, Mohammad Hemami and Mohammad Mahdi Moayeri, PhD graduates of SBU, has been published recently by SBU Press in 320 pages.
Neuro (cognitive) science, which focuses on neuronal connections in the brain as the generator of mental processes, is one of the developing sciences and the most exciting prospect for the modern application of mathematics. It can be said that this field of knowledge focuses on its essential factor, i.e., the brain, which is known as the most complex system in the world today, and its processes and inherent complexities.
The contribution of mathematics and neuroscience can be seen as the two sides of a coin called computational neuroscience, and the authors of the book have also focused on this line of research and have emphasized the use of mathematics and computing to simulate, model and control human neural dynamics in order to describe and predict this complex process. More precisely, mathematical modeling and scientific computing methods have been used to investigate how a single neuron functions in the brain, the function of neuronal networks and on a macro scale to investigate, describe and predict complex human cognitive functions such as decision-making and learning.
The book is perhaps the first of its kind in Persian language in which this specialized branch of science has been examined and described, and the authors have made the results of their many years of studies in this field available to readers and enthusiasts of this area.
In writing this book, an effort has been made to describe almost all the necessary material for modeling, simulating and controlling human neural dynamics. Therefore, in this seven-chapter book, the authors have started from a micro view and moved towards a macro view to investigate brain processes. In this book, a plug-in named NPDS is also designed based on MATLAB software, which helps those interested in this research field to study and simulate control algorithms and dynamic behavior of neurons with the least amount of programming.
